Is Linux Haven Dead?.............

The answer is no...to be honest i have been more or less avoiding making any new posts or any new graphics additions to this blog until i figured out what i was gonna do with it.

But i feel i should as least update the public(the couple of people who even bother to read it) on what is going on...lol.

Ok,so here it goes,i have recently ditched Kubuntu for Arch Linux and i am absolutely loving it,i still have a few snags to work on,but no biggie. If for some reason you are like completely bored with your current setup i recommend that you give it a try. It's definitely not the easiest to setup(somewhere between Gentoo and Slackware).

My next project to conquer is LFS or Linux From Scratch, that's right you heard me,i am gonna roll my own distro...lol.

So stay tuned for more updates...:-)

Pac Man?

Ok since i have not recently even looked at this blog, for some stupid reason, pac man turned into an ad for live webcams,so i have promptly removed it.

Update Progress..

Well there really is none, for now.

I have recently been trying to recover from a catastrophic hard drive crash on my laptop,so everything i had planned for Linux Haven went straight into the drink,so i am rebuilding everything from scratch once again...lol

Oh well...such is life.

Time For An Update.....

I know it has been awhile since i have posted anything on here, but here goes nothing...LOL

As far as any projects i have started(including the IBM server) has pretty much stalled out for now,but i guess i needed a break from computers and the internet and focus my attention elsewhere...And today was one of the most emotional days i have had in a longtime..We went to see World Trade Center and i must say it was one of the best movies i have ever experienced so far...brought back many memories and horrors that to this day i have totally blocked out.

Its amazing to see what human beings are capable of...and all to make a tiny statement,2500 people died....FOR NO DAMN REASON!!!!!!

Never Forget,Never Forgive.

My Take On Vista.........

As you know i usually try to concentrate on Linux when it comes to this site but i just had to make my opinions known about Microsofts flagship operating system Vista,i downloaded the beta 2 when it became available, made space for it on my laptop, which comes in just above the lower limit of the recommended requirements that i needed to run Vista, and i installed it,which as you know takes forever,LOL.

My first impression of Vista was impressive, but as i soon found out that it was incredibly slow compared to XP,the top reason for that was Aero which is the new theme that windows ships with, alot of eye candy maybe to much.

Vista also nags the living hell outta you with its new system protection scheme which asks you repeatedly if you want to allow programs and such to run or not,i guess they are trying to save me from myself lol.......

And if you are comfortable running XP,forget it Vista is nothing like XP or any other Windows version for that matter, all the common settings people are used to are now either hidden or you need to dig around with alot of tabs and pages, not very user friendly.....

On the upside Vista shipped with a stripped down version of Media Center(which surprised the heck outta me)if you have a pc with a supported tv capture card and fm radio you are set...

If i had to rate Vista,i would rate it low on the must have list.

#1-Its going to be way to pricey, last i heard it was gonna be around 500 bucks
#2-Hardware requirements are gonna be outta reach for most of the people with older
computers,64 bit cpu's...at least 256 mb video memory....and at least 1 gig of memory.

Until Microsoft is ready to ship the final version, these requirements and price are still up in the air so who knows.if it was me i would say the heck with it and stay with XP for awhile.

Woo Hoo.....

I guess i saw my first Canadian celebrity while walking through West Edmonton Mall.

If you ever watched Canada's Worst Handyman then you will recognize Merle Auger.

Yuppers the King Of Duct Tape strolled past me,with his female companion while on the way to the food fair to meet my wife, while we were their kerri also got a glimpse of merle.

So i guess i can add him to my list of celebrities i have seen or met(right up there with George Carlin,Carrot Top,Angelina Jolie,Madonna, countless sports celebs,And of course The Great One himself Ozzy Osbourne).

Oh Well, what can i say,Life is SWEEEEEEEEEEET LOL.

My First IBM.....

Ok,so here we go,just picked up my first ever IBM PC,i have never worked on one,and i am glad i never did, this thing is built like a Sherman Tank.

It took me at least 5 minutes to figure out how to take the damn thing apart for its initial cleaning and inspection,i was quite surprised that for as old as it is,it has a usb and a firewire port.

it is a dual Pentium Pro 200 mhz,but as i found out that the second one has a vrm which is missing,so i will have to stay on the lookout for one of those,so it will operate in 32 bit mode till i find one.

oh well,i was hoping to run a 64 bit server on my home lan,so i will just set it up as a plain jane server for now lol

Ok Time For An Update......

My laptop is hummung along all happy....i have had this laptop for almost 2 years...so far i have had no trouble with it since i bought it.i have been warned by other geeks and online reviews that this laptop has had a alot of problems like hard drive failure, screen failures and case fractures do to extensive overheating.

But for some reason even after all the warnings and bad reviews i bought the last one Best Buy had in stock, even the salesperson warned me not to buy it(who knew a under educated, pimple faced moron would know about it,lol).

But lately, one of the problems has been overheating, blowing compressed air through the fan and heat tube fins solved the problem for a short while, but it came right back,so this week i went to the Source and bought a tube of heat sink compund, its not as good as Artic Silver, but it does its job.

I cleaned up the old compound with alcohol, and smeared a few dobs of compound on the cpu, being careful not to get any on the bridges surrounding the core, put everything back together and booted up,so far she is running happily along.

I still dont understand why people freak out when it comes to doing something this simple, must be just me...LOL

Oh For Pete's Sake!!!!!

Today,i got an e-mail from someone who viewed this site and informed me that my definition for what Linux is was all wrong....I have only one thing to say about that..
Well Whoopdie Friggin Doo....
excuse me if i don't have my textbook to quote word for word what it is.
So ITGoddess or whatever your name is,go back to your friggin help desk, lube up your slot and stick a floppy disk in it would ya,and leave people alone!

New Stuff..

As you may of noticed within the last week i have been improving this blog and added a few new goodies, such as the layout, colors, and chat room...and of course if ya get bored from all the tech chat you can always go to the bottom of the page and play Pac Man for a bit. LOL

Wooo Hooo..........

We have just purchased our first digital camera...well not exactly purchased,it came in a printer/camera bundle, but still for the price we couldn't pass it up :).

But of course, being the printer is a newer model it is not compatible with linux, but the old printer is so i will still have a printer. The camera on the other hand is totally compatible so i am very happy with that.the only problem i have is that i only have three usb ports LOL.

So a usb hub is in the budget for the near future.

Welcome To Linux Haven...

First off let me state that Linux is NOT Unix...Linux was created by Linus Torvolds and is based on the unix code....Ok with that out of the way, lets get started shall we.

As of this post i am running Mandriva 2006 on my laptop and Ubuntu(in server mode) on my Compaq which i have made into a file server at the moment.for those of you that have any experience with the EP/ES series of Compaqs know that they can be a pain in the ass to strip down to bare bones and still run,for instance there is no option in the bios to turn off the Halt on all errors deal(...i.e. if there is no keyboard or video card it will halt and not allow you to boot up normally)...i have sorta made a workaround to the keyboard issue,i basically tore apart an old keyboard and just used the PCB and the plug...it seems to work ok,as far as the video card.i will just have to admit defeat and leave it in there lol.
